Zizamele Ceramics

Zizamele Ceramics began in 2006 as a MAPPP-SETA-sponsored learnership at False Bay College, Noordhoek, where trainees and trainer Toni Burton designed and marketed their own products. The name means “to develop.” Registered as a CC in 2008, the business is 100% woman-owned, with succession plans to make the artisans part-owners. Its vision, “The Art of Changing Lives,” is embodied in the signature Ubuntu Bowl, which shows Xhosa women holding hands, reflecting the belief that people are stronger together. Its mission is “Making world class ceramics in Africa. Products include vases, candlesticks, t-lights, Christmas angels, the Women of Africa range, a new white-on-white décor line, and commissions such as wall panels for The Woman King. Retail outlets operate at Imhoff Farm and the V&A Waterfront, alongside workshops and team-builds. Branded wooden crates allow safe worldwide shipping.Three Ubuntu Bowls are in the Iziko SA National Gallery’s collection. Clients include Anthropologie, Crate & Barrel, Homegoods, and the Smithsonian African Museum. Zizamele is confident it can handle export orders of any size.
